Think you may have equinus? In this foot and ankle condition, the upward bending motion of the ankle joint is limited. Equinus can occur inequinus one or both feet. HOSEY Foot & Ankle centers, which has offices in Clinton Township, MI, Sterling Heights, MI, and Mount Clemens, MI, offers treatments for equinus.

Overview

Individuals with equinus lack the flexibility to bring the top of the foot toward the front of the leg. Equinus develops slowly over time and can be the underlying cause of pain in many areas of the ankle, foot, and leg. Equinus is often a condition that is found in conjunction with other ankle and foot problems.

Causes

Sometimes equinus is caused by spasms in the calf muscle. In some individuals, this tightness is genetically inherited, and sometimes it's present at birth. Often, it's due to tightness in the calf muscles or Achilles tendon. Additionally, diabetes can affect the tendon fibers and cause tightness. Other people acquire the tightness from being on crutches, being in a cast, or frequently wearing high heels.

Diagnosis

You should see a podiatrist if you think you may have equinus. A podiatrist is a doctor who specializes in foot and ankle care. To diagnose equinus, the podiatrist will evaluate your ankle's range of motion when the knee is extended as well as bent. This will enable the foot doctor to assess whether bone is interfering with your ankle's range of motion and to identify whether the muscle or Achilles tendon is tight. Your doctor may also order x-rays.

Treatment

Treatment includes strategies aimed at relieving your symptoms. Common treatments for equinus include night splints, heel lifts, orthotic devices, and physical therapy. In some cases, a surgical procedure may be necessary to correct the cause of the deformity. The surgeon will determine the type of procedure that is best suited to the patient.
